Day 27: Friends

Had a day off for my birthday.
Missing my close friend group from school, so today's songs are about that:

Hindi:
1) Title Song - Dil Chahta Hai. Road trips are awesome.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_TfqqmTewI

2) All Izz Well - 3 Idiots. Never saw this movie, but in the words of my cynical friend, it's a comedy movie interlaced with abrupt horrible tragedy. And this video reflects that rather well.

Tamil:
1) Ilangaathu Veesudhe - Pithamagan. A fantastic movie (little scary), but you grow to like this friend group of misfits.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFn9rM47nZ8

2) Mustafa Mustafa - Kadhal Desam. Another song infused with a solid amount of english, but regardless a classic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XSstxWel-U

Telugu:
1) O My Friend - Happy Days. I think it's hilarious that the movie and song title have not a single word of Telugu. Aside from that, Karthik's singing in this song is very fitting to the mood.

Day 26: Memes

I hate to do a topic like this, but there's been an increase in Indian music in internet memes lately, so I might as well cover it. I promise I'll return to more normal music tomorrow.

Tamil:
Kalloori Vaanil - Pennin Manathai Thottu. Also known as Benny Lava. For those not familiar, someone took this Tamil song and subtitled it. But instead of translating it, they simply wrote the words they thought it was saying in English. Obviously ended hilariously; there are now several Benny Lava merchandise, including t-shirts that you can buy.

Punjabi:
Tunak Tunak Tun - Daler Mehndi. Absurd subtitler ("Buffalax") strikes again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdG_fey4_ow

Telugu:
1) Gola Gola - Ashok --> Indian Nyan Cat.
First watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFaQyucfnc4  Relatively impressive Telugu music video.
Then watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH2-TGUlwu4  Lord help us all.
Then finally, the demon child of the two:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wdw64aHYXA
It's frightening how well the dance moves work.

2) Golimaar - Donga. Also known as Indian Thriller. Self-explanatory.

Now that that's over with, I'll post some meaningful songs tomorrow.

Day 25: Try To Keep Up

A few songs with really difficult dance moves.

Hindi:
Hrithik Roshan blows everyone out of the water, with Shahid Kapoor on his tail.
1) Baawre-Luck By Chance. The moves at 0:54. No camera is HD enough to figure out what in the world he is doing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slAtAdceDrI&feature=fvwrel

2) Fire - Kites. Those windmills are very clean, and I am very jealous.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3T4iwKJ0_eM

Tamil:
Lawrence and Prabhu Deva are kings here, but I'll focus more on Lawrence.
1) Thaam Thakka Theem - Thirumalai. This is not sped up, its actual speed. Some parts look like they're on fast forward.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMJOzhrTWa4

2) Sangili Bungili - Kanchana. Some of the most impressive south Indian moves I've seen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fopgCT2X_0g

Telugu:
1) Style Zindabad - Style. Lawrence back again, doing some mind defying dance moves.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfRVrQ1nBsY

2) Va Re Va- Bunny. Allu Arjun (Indian Thriller guy's nephew) is another fantastic dancer, and I'm surprised he has functioning knees after doing this music video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-M1ksz0dnY

Day 24: It's Cold

Couple songs about cold air/weather/water.

Hindi:
Thandi Hawayen - Naujawan. An oldie by Lata.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ki6Mzkb0GY

Tamil:
Kuliruthu Kuliruthu - Taj Mahal. A little older AR Rahman song from the dismal movie Taj Mahal. Luckily the songs from the movie make up for it.

Day 23: Competition Bhangra Tunes

And after another absurd delay, during which I graduated, had my last Badmaash show and released a video game, I'm finally back in control of this blog. I promise nearly daily posts for at least the remainder of this summer.

Here are a few songs that I like from this bhangra competition season, all very danceable songs.

1) Katal Kare - DJ Sanj.  Currently also the #1 downloaded south asian song on the internet for the month. Not a terrible fan of Sanj's rapping, but I hope he'll figure it out soon that his music is fantastic without it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZy3ZrFDJEE

2) Kan Kar Gal Sun - Cloud 9. Takes about a minute to get started, but it's good stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHy83v1GZ54

3) Gabroo Rangeeleh - Gupsy Aulja and Saini Surinder. This song features Violinder, which I think is definitely the highlight of this song, especially that ending. He's going places and I hope he stays very prominent in the music industry.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGYf3ki6l7M

4) Shake it - Saini Surinder. Much more modern track, catchy tune.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL8UsyOUsy4

Bonus) Yaar Bathere - Alfaaz ft. Honey Singh. Wasn't in any competitions, but this song is just so heavy, I had to include it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj3L0trEf-4

Day 22: Lies

1) Jhooti-Nachhatar Gill. Look up UNC Bhangra Elite 8 2012's video, they do a bhangra dance to this song with the UNC drumline in the back.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoeVYlgqIjw

2) Dhurogam-Aaru. A song about betrayal and deceit. Hariharan is a good voice for these sad/angry songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SKVpoL_ouM

Day 21: Absurd Sadness

Some songs don't even try to hide how sad the person is.

Hindi:
1) Hai Dard from Ada. Slow song by Udit Narayan.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=how0tiis04o

2) Koi Patthar Se Na Maare - Aaja Nachle. The movie reenacts a play of Laila Majnu; an older movie had a song of the same title and purpose.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhWefHi4YMk

3) Kehti Hai Yeh Hawa from Kuch Naa Kaho. I like this singer's voice, it's not super high pitch like most female singers in the industry.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciQb-uxw4qo

Tamil:
1) Kaadhal Rojave from Roja. Probably the song that brought AR Rahman to nationwide popularity.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wCmHxgcaek
