Day 48: Grungy and Divine

Two songs with very different feels.

Telugu:
Mahishasura Mardhini - Shakti. This song is supposedly millenia old, composed in 810 AD.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c77Xjt1eC4

Hindi:
Bharat Mata Ki Jai - Shanghai. This song caused some controversy due to the line beginning with "sone ki chidiya..." where critics commented that it portrays a negative view of Bharat Mata.

Day 46: Big Bang Theory

It's been a few days, been busy finalizing work and some mixes, so today I'll post a result of the work I've put in this week:
http://soundcloud.com/dj-srimix/big-bang-theory

More coming soon! Many mixes to complete this month.

Day 44: Hudugaru

Cool song from a Kannada movie; impressive because it's sung by two Hindi singers (who probably don't speak Kannada) as well as Vijay Prakash, the guy who sings Manmohini Morey from Yuvvraj.

Yen Chandane - Hudugaru

Day 43: My Phone Alarm Ringtone

That horn solo around 1:00 once the song starts up will wake any sleeping person.

Day 42: A little disoriented

Two songs about getting a little tipsy/intoxicated.

Hindi:
1) Khaike Paan Banaraswala-Don. The classic party/paan/tipsy song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUoZGpqyEe0

2) Subha Hone Na De - Desi Boyz. Because every night is party night.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WijioxJ9dMM

Tamil:
1) Kikku Eruthey - Padayappa.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQ50uulx9Hc
This movie contains the epic scene where Rajni materializes a swing out of nowhere, because he is the South Indian Chuck Norris. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S42TJjB3pcg

2) Thirunelveli Halwa Da - Saamy. Explains how all the different saamy (gods) are associated with various venerated objects, like a blade, a village, but for this guy Saamy, he's associated with a bottle of alcohol.

Day 41: Culture Shock

Here are a few songs/remixes I like by the group Culture Shock

-Superbass + Bumbro. This concept works beautifully.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1lpdZyDPXs

-Rude Boy. Another sick remix.

Day 40: Origins of Bird Flu

Short post today, been super swamped with work.

Some of you may have heard the song Bird Flu by MIA:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmbuF6hjOo0

Here is the original inspiration for the MIA version:
Thiruvizha Nu Vandha - Jeyam

Day 39: Abheri

Continuing the trend of picking a raag, here are some songs in Abheri.

Instrumental:
1) Abheri by L. Shankar. First and foremost, listen to this. He won a Grammy for this composition. He's playing a double violin, and it's incredible (no idea how he's playing at 1:36 so fast). If you like it, look up the full 40 minute version, it's great.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYD7b-oXduU

Hindi (some of these may be Bhimpalasi, which is really close to Abheri):
1) Manmohini Morey - Yuvvraj. An underrated song from this aggressively mediocre movie, this song is interesting because the ascending scale is North Indian/Hindustani and the descending scale is South Indian/Carnatic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38j8nQfbKcg

2) Tere Sadke Balam - Amar. Classic Dilip Kumar song from the 50's.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlTdU5C3lpo

3) Kismat Se Tum - Pukar.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftOsgf9xFok

Tamil:
1) Kannodu Kanbathellam - Jeans. A hilarious story involving a computer projection of a second Aishwarya Rai, intended to convince a pair of male twins that there are two of her.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpODjWfy_aI

2) Anbe Anbe - Jeans. Another great song from this movie.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUydYmpfi9k

Telugu:
1) Neevena Nannu - Maya Bazaar. Very famous movie from long ago, here is one of the songs.

Day 38: Top Bollywood of 2012

This is effectively a repost from Bollywood America, but I agree with a large majority of the songs here. I'll do another post on top songs for the South Indian side.

http://top10hm.com/top-10-bollywood-songs-2012/

#4 and #2 are my favorites.

Day 37: Anandha Bhairavi

I'm recently getting more into analyzing songs by raag, coming in surprising use for remixes. This one is Anandha Bhairavi, look it up on Wikipedia for more info.

Tamil:
1) Konja Naal - Aasai. A very popular song in my car when I was a kid. The dance moves are interesting to watch too :P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLGfzD9HAaw

2) Mettu Podu - Duet. Another older song. And whoever that guy playing carnatic saxophone it, he's a boss.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8NCbcxjLho

Telugu:
1) Namakame- Komaram Puli. A beautiful devotional song by AR Rahman, from a year or so ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFmNe7p2s84
Bears a striking resemblance to O Paalanhare from Lagaan:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_APy24v9c3E

Day 36: First Dance

I didn't start dancing until I came to college, but there was one dance I did for a Diwali festival at University Wyoming as a highschool kid (yes, diwali exists in Wyoming, pretty much the only South Asian event in the state).

Here are the songs my group of 4 people danced to:

Hindi:
1) Maahi Ve - Kal Ho Naa Ho. If you also haven't seen the G.U.J.J.U. song that directly proceeds this in the movie, go check that out, it's rather hilarious.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzs1ZoLzwMw

2) Chamma Chamma - China Gate. This song also made an appearance in the american film version of Moulin Rouge.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUErNip4DNc

3) Mauja Hi Mauja - Jab We Met. This song was a hit at parties that year as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_UZ8hJxOFw

Telugu
4) Bham Bham Bole - Indra. Both Hariharan and Shankar Mahadevan sing this song, which I think is a great collabo between popular male singers. Also, has a great drum beat.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlF6i22RKkE

Day 35: Baby

Two songs about babies.
I'm coming around to this at the very end of the day, so I'll elaborate on this post later when I have more time, there are many more songs to be added in this topic.

Tamil:
1) Azhagu Kutty Chellam - Saththam Podathey. Cool airy/echo vocal effect in this song. Shankar also has a cool improv at 1:26.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1AtsbHuQs8

2) Chinna Maharani - Priyasakhi. Very classic Tamil/Filmi song feel. This song just reminds me of my baby sister (who is now grown up.) Random fact, this was the first Indian movie to be dubbed into Zulu.

Day 34: Ooh La La

Two songs I've heard recently this week with the phrase "Ooh la la" in it.

Hindi:
Ooh La La - The Dirty Picture. Song has an older feel to it, my mom remarked it had some resemblance in feel to Dhoom Taana from Om Shanti Om.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT0V_vcd_ME

Tamil:
Manna Madhurai - Minsara Kanavu. One of my favorite songs as a kid - it's so happy! Also, Prabhu Deva and Kajol in the same movie = victory. This movie was later dubbed into hindi as Sapnay.

Day 33: Violinder is a Beast

Here are a bunch of songs by this upcoming artist.

-Beautiful People Cover. By far my favorite by this him, I think this is WAY better than the Chris Brown version :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-9_6A9TeKU

-Gone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpE-67ZE_IY

-Memories
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFQtMMj1Xzk

-Morni
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-Lzbl5RVrA

 -This freestyle. So boss.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymNt9iwa-Xk

-For those more classically inclined, a session in Raag Jog and Raag Bhairavi:

Day 32: Bhangra with Style

I find bhangra songs that use synth/piano to be more than just mimic techno very interesting, and often it results in really catchy riffs. Here are a few examples I could think of.

1) Sadi Gal Hor Yah - PBN Meets DCS.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pIf3ryzapA

2) Kaim Rahe Sardari - Epic Bhangra. The riff I'm referring to comes in at around 0:53.
http://soundcloud.com/epicbhangra/kaim-rahe-sardari-remastered

3) Jattan De Munde -Ravinder Grewal.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3nJWmdUK7Y

4) Notorious Jatt - Prabh Gill. This song still hasn't gotten old for me yet.

Day 31: Prepare For Flight

Getting on a plane to Korea, which will be a full day and a half ordeal, so I'll post a single song to stall until I land.

Mere Salaam Le Jaa- Uran Khatola. One of the first hindi movies I saw as a kid, my dad being an old movie fanatic. About a guy who crash lands and is subsequently trapped in a matriarchal village. They worship a specific God, and things aren't going too favorably, some people get sacrificed, some women dress as men to evade persecution, etc etc. It's great, watch it, if you can find it...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rwHMbr96cg

Day 30: And now for my next number...

Here are a few 90's classics; another request from a friend on DDT, raaspberry.
There are far too many good songs to post, so I'll follow this up with another post on classics soon.

1) Title Song - Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LySQy4XmZLg

2) Sexy Sexy - Khuddar. This song reminds me irreversibly of Pandemonium's 2009 dance when they revealed lungi's under the hiphop gear.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxMnbKOaQrg

4) Medley - Mujhse Dosti Karoge. A classic movie with even more oldie songs embedded within. A must-listen track. Challenge: can you name all the original movies from the medley?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIvGUTPe3hc

5) Tu Cheez Badi - Mohra. The first hindi music video I saw as a child. Certainly emotionally scarring. Regardless, a fantastic/controversial song of my childhood.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oDRf-rLscY

6) Chane Ke Khet - Anjaam. Madhuri, you're the best.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QaLaMKwUCE

7) Ruk Jaa Dil Deewane - Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge. This movie is full of very memorable songs, I'll pick one of the most energetic ones.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILbAmPbIYlQ

8) Chand Taare - Yes Boss. Another SRK + Piano song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1upYpFB8F4

9) Mukkabala - Kadhalan. The star of this song is certainly Prabhu Deva and his crazy dancing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH6CQzf_bnU

10) Ek Ladki Ko Dekha - 1942 Love Story. A very necessary component to a 90's song collection.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9sHR4ZrhKc

Day 29: The North has gone South

Let's face it; North India secretly has an obsession with the South. It explains why so many movies are remakes (Billu Barber, Singham, Ready, Rowdy Rathore, Bodyguard, Force, Bhool Bhulaiya, Garam Masala, Ghajini, Sunday, Shakti, Ek Deewana Tha, etc etc.)

Here are a few North Indian songs, coupled with their Southie originals. (This wouldn't be fair if I didn't do the converse, so I'll cover that another day.)

1) Title Song - Saathiya
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vMEtXqLh1A
Pachai Nirame - Alai Payuthey
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cECtE8DVTyo

2) Dhinka Chika - Ready
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWRE98YSO00
Ring Ringa - Aarya 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLAY-mTjp-w

3) Khwabon Khwabon - Force
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtX7iJeDc3c
Uyirin Uyire - Kaakha Kaakha
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkgwiu99mAg

4) Suniye To - Yes Boss. Little older one, I actually think this one is considerably better than the original...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJ24Y1cUaT4
Azhagiya Laila - Ullathai Alli Tha
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYO-DI2z2Dg

5) Aa Re Pritam Pyare - Rowdy Rathore
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlonlZQ_gbs
Vaadi Vaadi Naatu - Alli Thanda Vaanam
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diTWppVudE8

6) Chikni Chameli - Agneepath
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZtovGD1dw4
Kombdi Palali - Jatra. This is Marathi, but regardless has a heavy south influence, so I thought I'd add it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIgyiHxSbiM

UPDATE:
7) Aa Ante Amalapuram - Maximum (Thanks to Sidra for pointing this one out)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LM1-9L607F8
Aa Ante Amalapuram - Aarya

Day 28: Hip-hop Infused Bolly

Going to Korea for a month, had to deal with some visa nonsense, but I'm back today to cover a special topic requested by my

-Jhoom Jhoom Ta Hun - Players. This is closer to a Hardstyle/House dance beat than hiphop, but still a popular and hard hitting song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8_ZI265Q1A

-Mere Naal Nach - Bikram Singh. Punjabi, but has a strong back beat for choreo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PW-Doz3S-w

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0BnxutSJ9k

-The song Yaar Bathere, which I posted previously, also has potential for hiphop. I'll repost it here:

Day 27: Friends

Had a day off for my birthday.
Missing my close friend group from school, so today's songs are about that:

Hindi:
1) Title Song - Dil Chahta Hai. Road trips are awesome.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_TfqqmTewI

2) All Izz Well - 3 Idiots. Never saw this movie, but in the words of my cynical friend, it's a comedy movie interlaced with abrupt horrible tragedy. And this video reflects that rather well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-LltgOtFSg

Tamil:
1) Ilangaathu Veesudhe - Pithamagan. A fantastic movie (little scary), but you grow to like this friend group of misfits.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFn9rM47nZ8

2) Mustafa Mustafa - Kadhal Desam. Another song infused with a solid amount of english, but regardless a classic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XSstxWel-U

Telugu:
1) O My Friend - Happy Days. I think it's hilarious that the movie and song title have not a single word of Telugu. Aside from that, Karthik's singing in this song is very fitting to the mood.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCqgMmc5cak

Day 26: Memes

I hate to do a topic like this, but there's been an increase in Indian music in internet memes lately, so I might as well cover it. I promise I'll return to more normal music tomorrow.

Tamil:
Kalloori Vaanil - Pennin Manathai Thottu. Also known as Benny Lava. For those not familiar, someone took this Tamil song and subtitled it. But instead of translating it, they simply wrote the words they thought it was saying in English. Obviously ended hilariously; there are now several Benny Lava merchandise, including t-shirts that you can buy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxS6bFFhi6g

Punjabi:
Tunak Tunak Tun - Daler Mehndi. Absurd subtitler ("Buffalax") strikes again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdG_fey4_ow

Telugu:
1) Gola Gola - Ashok --> Indian Nyan Cat.
First watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFaQyucfnc4  Relatively impressive Telugu music video.
Then watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH2-TGUlwu4  Lord help us all.
Then finally, the demon child of the two:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wdw64aHYXA
It's frightening how well the dance moves work.

2) Golimaar - Donga. Also known as Indian Thriller. Self-explanatory.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x81iip6psks

Now that that's over with, I'll post some meaningful songs tomorrow.

Friday, June 8, 2012

Day 25: Try To Keep Up

A few songs with really difficult dance moves.

Hindi:
Hrithik Roshan blows everyone out of the water, with Shahid Kapoor on his tail.
1) Baawre-Luck By Chance. The moves at 0:54. No camera is HD enough to figure out what in the world he is doing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slAtAdceDrI&feature=fvwrel

2) Fire - Kites. Those windmills are very clean, and I am very jealous.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3T4iwKJ0_eM

Tamil:
Lawrence and Prabhu Deva are kings here, but I'll focus more on Lawrence.
1) Thaam Thakka Theem - Thirumalai. This is not sped up, its actual speed. Some parts look like they're on fast forward.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMJOzhrTWa4

2) Sangili Bungili - Kanchana. Some of the most impressive south Indian moves I've seen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fopgCT2X_0g

Telugu:
1) Style Zindabad - Style. Lawrence back again, doing some mind defying dance moves.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfRVrQ1nBsY

2) Va Re Va- Bunny. Allu Arjun (Indian Thriller guy's nephew) is another fantastic dancer, and I'm surprised he has functioning knees after doing this music video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-M1ksz0dnY

Day 24: It's Cold

Couple songs about cold air/weather/water.

Hindi:
Thandi Hawayen - Naujawan. An oldie by Lata.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ki6Mzkb0GY

Tamil:
Kuliruthu Kuliruthu - Taj Mahal. A little older AR Rahman song from the dismal movie Taj Mahal. Luckily the songs from the movie make up for it.

Day 23: Competition Bhangra Tunes

And after another absurd delay, during which I graduated, had my last Badmaash show and released a video game, I'm finally back in control of this blog. I promise nearly daily posts for at least the remainder of this summer.

Here are a few songs that I like from this bhangra competition season, all very danceable songs.

1) Katal Kare - DJ Sanj.  Currently also the #1 downloaded south asian song on the internet for the month. Not a terrible fan of Sanj's rapping, but I hope he'll figure it out soon that his music is fantastic without it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZy3ZrFDJEE

2) Kan Kar Gal Sun - Cloud 9. Takes about a minute to get started, but it's good stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHy83v1GZ54

3) Gabroo Rangeeleh - Gupsy Aulja and Saini Surinder. This song features Violinder, which I think is definitely the highlight of this song, especially that ending. He's going places and I hope he stays very prominent in the music industry.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGYf3ki6l7M

4) Shake it - Saini Surinder. Much more modern track, catchy tune.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL8UsyOUsy4

Bonus) Yaar Bathere - Alfaaz ft. Honey Singh. Wasn't in any competitions, but this song is just so heavy, I had to include it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj3L0trEf-4

Monday, March 12, 2012

Day 22: Lies

1) Jhooti-Nachhatar Gill. Look up UNC Bhangra Elite 8 2012's video, they do a bhangra dance to this song with the UNC drumline in the back.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoeVYlgqIjw

2) Dhurogam-Aaru. A song about betrayal and deceit. Hariharan is a good voice for these sad/angry songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SKVpoL_ouM

Thursday, March 1, 2012

Day 21: Absurd Sadness

Some songs don't even try to hide how sad the person is.

Hindi:
1) Hai Dard from Ada. Slow song by Udit Narayan.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=how0tiis04o

2) Koi Patthar Se Na Maare - Aaja Nachle. The movie reenacts a play of Laila Majnu; an older movie had a song of the same title and purpose.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhWefHi4YMk

3) Kehti Hai Yeh Hawa from Kuch Naa Kaho. I like this singer's voice, it's not super high pitch like most female singers in the industry.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciQb-uxw4qo

Tamil:
1) Kaadhal Rojave from Roja. Probably the song that brought AR Rahman to nationwide popularity.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wCmHxgcaek

Day 20: Work + - Sleep

It's been an absurdly long night of various tasks (choreo, mixes for teams), hence the 620am post.

Here are 3 songs I've used in time of dire concentration and also just as background noise for a nap.
It's a set of 3 from AR Rahman's Connections album. All are flute instrumentals, and C is definitely my favorite.

A) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6iQOTwYJOM
B) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Em2LoN4WpO0
C) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1fLpA4qc_k

Day 19: Skipping Down The Street

A few songs that are just that right mood and speed that you could skip down the sidewalk listening to it.

Hindi:
1) ABBG from Kuch Naa Kaho. A song that uses English letters as a pun for a short conversation in Hindi.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l1YH3rxSm8

2) Mera Joota Hai Japani from Shree 420. The stuff I listened to as a kid, this song gained immense popularity in countries surrounding India, particularly in Russia.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wjGc1zGWBc&ob=av3e

Tamil:
1) Azhaipaaya from Kadhalil Sodhapuvathu Eppadi. Complicated long name, but one of the most chill songs I've heard in a long time, esp 1:43.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZgPoRC7NXI

2) Hosanna from Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya. Movie was remade in hindi recently as Ek Deewana Tha. Dance sequence at 1:36 was especially popular.

Day ....18: War Rhythms

So I fell horribly behind, then forgot this existed, but my friend Neesha reminded me so I'm gonna start this up again.
Apologies to anyone who has been anxiously waiting for new stuff. :|

I just finished a major project, feeling motivated, so here are some super hard hitting, almost battle drum beat worthy songs. Most of them also happen to be devotional, there's certainly a cultural connection between the two.

1) Deva Shree Ganesha from Agneepath. By the Marathi composers Ajay-Atul, who make awwwesome drum heavy songs .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzDzZs4sWkc

2) Seval Kodi from Billa. Remake of Don in tamil, but the hindi counterpart is a little more melodic and less drum heavy. Both are great songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW3Ss6UDnR0

3) Sakti Kodu from Baba. Literally translates to "give me strength." Fantastic AR Rahman song. Also, any video with Rajnikanth is epic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOHnjFhUiWk

More coming soon!
-Sri

EDIT: This song deserves to be on this list too. Aarambh from Gulaal, literally a political war song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxybS3Dah4k
